Castleton Tower

What:

At close to 400’ tall, Castleton Tower is an iconic and beautiful formation that stands sentinel over the wide expanses of Castle Valley. First climbed in 1961 by desert pioneers Layton Kor and Huntley Ingalls, the tower holds a special place in desert climbing history as one of the earliest spires in the area to be explored and holds a number of incredible and challenging routes on splitter cracks in perfect Wingate Sandstone. A day on Castleton is a truly memorable experience not to be missed while in Moab.

For those seeking a classic moderate tower climb, we consider the North Chimney (5.8++) to be one of the best crack climbs of its grade in the area.

Alternatively, for those looking for a more burly tick with sections of wide crack climbing in the sun, the Kor-Ingalls offers an exciting adventure at a similar grade. This route was notably included as one of Steck and Roper’s 50 Classic Climbs of North America.

For seasoned desert climbers looking for a challenging and sustained crack route up an exposed and beautiful face, The North Face (5.11a) is not to be missed.
